When will it get better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"crisis\" style=\"font-size:30px;font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">What Caused the Technology Supply Chain Crisis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Computer chips were some of the first components to be disrupted by the pandemic. Coronavirus-related factory shutdowns blocked chipmakers\u2019 ability to produce, leading to significant backorders and unpredictable lead times.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the PC market was swamped when workers shifted to work from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers wanted the latest phones, computers, and devices to effectively work from anywhere. Employers needed the right devices, tools, and hardware to support them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppliers and major equipment manufacturers struggled to keep up with skyrocketing demand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"blog-link\">\u201cWhile demand for semiconductors increased 17 percent from 2019 to 2021, there was no commensurate increase in supply,\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/25\/business\/economy\/chips-semiconductors-shortage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">according to the New York Times<\/span><\/a><\/strong>. \u201cA vast majority of semiconductor plants are using about 90 percent of their capacity to manufacture chips, meaning they have little immediate ability to increase their output.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The need for chips is expected to increase, as technologies that use vast amounts of semiconductors, like 5G and electric vehicles, become more widespread.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"blog-link\">This January, chip delivery times (the gap between when a chip is ordered and when it is delivered) swelled to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-04\/chip-delivery-times-are-on-the-rise-again-shortages-to-continue#xj4y7vzkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">an average of 25.8 weeks<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, the longest wait time in five years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The delay affects the production of everything from consumer electronics to cars, LED and lighting fixtures, and more. However, it&#8217;s not all bad news: the same report showed that for some suppliers, component lead times are &#8220;modestly&#8221; improving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tech\" style=\"font-size:30px;font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Technology Supply Slowly Adjusting to Demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many, we hoped that workplace technology shortages would begin to improve in 2022 as enterprises adjusted to long-term remote work and the pandemic became more contained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"blog-link\">However, other events such as the war in Ukraine and more <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/01\/5-ways-the-covid-19-pandemic-has-changed-the-supply-chain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pandemic lockdowns in China<\/span><\/a><\/strong> have created other bottlenecks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"blog-link\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gartner.com\/power-of-the-profession-blog\/semiconductor-shortage-what-will-2022-bring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gartner predicts supply chain constraints will continue<\/span><\/a><\/strong> for now, but 2022 will be a year of recovery during which \u201cfor the most part, supply will start to catch up to demand.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we may be in for a long haul as supply and demand balance out, their projections say that we could see a return to normal supply levels in Q3\/Q4 2022 or early 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, technology managers are facing day-to-day challenges and frustrated consumers asking, <em>\u201cWhere\u2019s my stuff?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"support\" style=\"font-size:30px;font-style:normal;font-weight:600\">Three Ways to Support Your Organization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#000018;font-style:normal;font-weight:500\"><strong>Practice Transparent Communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like consumer shopping, employees want clear information, an easy ordering process, and step-by-step updates on what&#8217;s happening. The exact ones you requested aren&#8217;t available for months, but similar alternatives are available in slightly different colors or models.
